Welcome to the forum

To swap a vehicles motor size you need to swap engine AND transmission, computer and it wiring harness, plus motor mounts and exhaust

Yes, it would be easier to swap your good 1996 3.0l Vulcan engine into a 1995-2008 Ranger with bad 3.0l engine

When swapping more than a few years apart plan on swapping intake manifolds, Ford changed connectors over the years and injectors, so its just easier to swap the whole intake over from the bad engine to your 1996 engine so wiring is just plug and play
2WD or 4x4 doesn't matter
Manual or automatic doesn't matter
As long as its a 1995-2008 3.0l Ranger or Mazda B3000 it will be just a motor exchange so straight forward swap

Ranger 4.0l, even though its a V6, would be same work as doing the Mazda B2500, because you are changing engine size
