99 ranger 3.0 violent stalling when accelerating
Hello all,
99 Ranger 4x4 3.0 flex .. couple days ago started stalling at cruising speed. Abs light flashes, truck jerks, feels like driveshaft falls out, speedometer jumps to max, and rpm’s drop all at same time lol! No CEL…I bought a new fuel pump a while back and haven’t installed it yet, truck had sat for two years when I got it. Have been driving it for 6 months ran fine until this started . It doesn’t die just completely loses power for a few seconds then normal for a few minutes then does it again.Seems like not a fuel loss more like ignition or electrical on account it happens so suddenly..any ideas? Thanks

Manual or automatic?
In a 1999 speedometer and ABS use the same rear axle sensor(1998-2000)
ABS light AND speedometer BOTH effected usually means a problem the one sensor or its wires
Speedo jumping to max would would cause computer to shift gears, if an automatic trans, which would cause jerking, and it would unlock the torque converter allowing engine RPMs to drop
So does the Speedometer jump FIRST?
If so change the rear ABS sensor(VSS) and check its 2 wires
Its fuel injection, so if fuel pump stops its like turning off a switch on the engine, same as if spark was instantly shut off, there is no "reserve fuel" like a carb had, as soon as pump goes off fuel pressure goes to 0psi
Electrical
Alternator can leak AC voltage, the speedo and ABS sensor uses AC Voltage, so........................
AC voltage can also effect spark and engine computer
Test alternator for "AC ripple", easy to do
Leaking AC will cause any number of odd issues

Changed VSS sensor. No improvement

Ron, my problem was electrical as you suggested, turned out it was the small ground wire that is usually attached to the main ground cable terminal on battery. It had a crimp connector and was bolted to the negative ground clamp . I was checking connections and it pulled right out of connector. I soldered on a heavy duty terminal and bolted it back to clamp and problem solved. Thanks .
