Alt Swap (Donor?)

On my Ranger, I swapped in a 130 amp alternator from a ford explorer. I recall it being the 4.0, but unsure of sohc or ohv.

Went back to grab an alternator for my father today, since we're both doing the efan mod, and I couldn't find one to save my hind. Every 4.0 expo either had the hood jammed shut and couldn't be opened, or the alt was gone.

So, I beg the question. What, if any, other vehicles could the alternator be taken from? Working on cross-referencing part #s on rockauto as well.

EDIT: His ranger is a 2003 Edge with the 3.0. 2 wheel drive, automatic.

Hmm. On rockauto, it seems that the 4.0 ohv's alternator is unique, going by partnumbers alone. The 4.0 sohc and 5.0 interchange.

However, according to autozone, both 4.0s interchange and the 5.0 is different. Using a 1998 explorer to crossreference.

This is leading me to believe all three can share the same alt.

Mid 2000s F150s with a 4.2 V6 come with them as well.

Ah, yes. Forgot about that one.

Gotta say though, the prices of brand new alts are outrageous! 90 dollars plus shipping, and that's one of the 'cheap' ones. No wonder all of 'em are gone.

Something that crossed my mind is to grab an alternator and three bolts from a vehicle that may work, and bring it over to an explorer then try to attach it. If it works, you'll know it fits.

Heh, I did find a 130 in an older taurus, but of course the mounting was all wrong. Had the 3.8 in it, too.

Considering that. There's plenty of ~03 yearmodels. I'll crossreference those.

EDIT: 98-03 taurus 3.0's (OHV and DOHC) alternators don't appear to be interchangable. Although, fun fact, they're 110 amp alts. However (at least for 98), the Ford Taurus came with the 3.4 v6, which this alternator is 130 amps AND happens to be the same part number as the 1998 ford explorer 5.0 and 4.0 sohc. Makes me think it'll fit the Ranger 3.0....
