Carbureted V6 stuttering on acceleration
Carbureted V6 stuttering on acceleration
So I have an 84 ranger with a V6 carbureted and it stuttering really bad 80% of the time and I’m trying to accelerate. Sometimes when taking off from a stop it will almost die. I’m new to owning a Ford I have always owned S10s/S15s. I’m just wondering if anybody can tell me what I probably need to fix? Please and thank you
First thing I would check is the accelerator pump. Its sole purpose is to provide extra fuel when.... well... accelerating. A bad accelerator pump causes the engine to run extremely lean when taking off which can cause stuttering or stalling.
+1 ^^^
You should have a 2150 carb, maybe 2150A, "A" has computer assist
Good read here on whats what on the 2150s: Motorcraft 2150 2V Carburetor
You can usually buy just accelerator pump rebuild kit, but may have to buy the whole rebuild kit, if you do I would rebuild the whole carb
Parts page here: http://www.carburetion.com/ford2v.htm

Thank you. This truck has been a fat pain in the butt since I bought it haha. But it was my brothers and he’s gone so sentimental value has turned me into a ford owner haha.
Considering a motor or upgrade in the future. Any recommendations to turn it into a fun toy? It would be a budget build.

Well your brother's Ranger is 34 year old now, so there will be some worn out parts.
The 2.8l V6 and its transmission was not a long lasting combo
2.8l engine info here: Ford Ranger/Bronco II 2.8 liter Engines
There are not many options for a swap.
Carbed V8(302/5.0l) with transmission would be the easiest
4.0l swap still needs transmission but also computer and full wiring harness swap since they were fuel injection only
You can dump alot of the "low emissions" stuff and get a standard carb and distributor for the 2.8l
This is a Duraspark conversion: Ford Ranger 2.8L Duraspark Conversion
BUT.................you want the Duraspark distributor NOT the duraspark module
You use an HEI module with Duraspark distibutor, yes GM spark module
Bullet proof setup and basically a one wire hook up
