Determining my Transmission Model number
Determining my Transmission Model number
I bought a 2003 Ford Ranger Edge. It has a 5 speed manual transmission. It did not come with an owners manual.. I need to somehow determine the right transmission fluid to use. How can I find the model number of the installed transmission so that I don't ruin my transmission changing the fluid? I know it takes ATF but I can't afford to ruin it. One ford Ranger manual I downloaded stated that Mercon and Mercon V are not interchangeable.

1988 thru 2011 Rangers used the M5OD-R1(M5R1) model manual transmission, they use ATF, yes, automatic transmission fluid in a manual transmission
Holds 2.8 quarts bone dry, so drain and refill usually takes 2 quarts, can be a bit more or less
The M5R1 is engine specific, bell housing is not detachable, internally they are all M5R1s, but each is made for a specific engine, i.e. 2.3l, 3.0l and 4.0l M5R1's are not interchangeable
Nor are 2WD or 4WD specific transmissions of any model number or year, not just the M5R1s, lol
