engine just stopped on the thruway
engine just stopped on the thruway
my brother has a 99 ranger xlt step side 3.0L that he gave to me because was driving down the thruway to work one day n it started spitting n sputtering n then the oil light came on and then she just stopped...she wouldn't even try to turn over or anything so he had her towed back to the local shop up here where we live n the main tech who is a friend of my family's said that its common for the 3 liter engines to get a carbon buildup on the oil pump shaft and they break and that's why it stopped working. The tech said it would be about a grand for a new engine or rebuild plus another 1100 for labor and my brother ain't a millionaire so me him and my father decided that we would rebuild it ourselves or swap it out ourselves...if i swap it i want to do a 5.0 swap...I was wondering what would be easier...rebuilding it and keeping it all stock or doing the swap and picking up some real power...the truck is in real good condition but the 4wd don't work right...some days if the moon is full, blue, the tide is high,it's 58.5 degrees and pigs are flying it'll work lol it's weird i don't know if its a bad connection or what but the tech i was talking about earlier couldn't figure it out n he's been in the business since he was 8 so maybe one of you guys has had this problem and got it figured out...plus I'm a college student so i don't have much money at all haha...any advice you guys have would help me out a ton...thank you all

3.0 Vulcans are a dime a dozen in the JY's.
You can use one from a Taurus, no problem.
You could have it out and replaced in a weekend, with the right tools and some help.
With your budget, I'd simply get another 3.0.

everything is different including the most important part, the camshaft.
Get another 3.0 out of a Ranger, mucho cheaper.
This has happened to a few buddies. EIther your oil pump itself died, and it seized the engine, or you're a victim of the cam sychro. Either way, you need a new/rebuilt engine.

I've been searching hardcore for another ranger that's wrecked up n in a junkyard with a 3.0 but the thing is it's flex fuel and around where i live they are tough to find because no one really has a ranger they either have a full size truck or a car and any ranger i do find that has the 3.0 flex fuel they want a million dollars for it like its the first mustang ever built u know...i found a couple of engines a little ways away from where i live they want 850 for the one wit 107K miles on it and they want 800 for the one with 122K miles on it my truck only has 98K miles on it but I'm not sure which way i want to go with it...buying the used engine with more miles on it or going with a completely new engine through ford or something it would be cheaper to go used but it would have more miles than the truck does
