Engine swap instead of leaking head gasket redo
Engine swap instead of leaking head gasket redo
Hey everyone, happy new year. I have a 2005 xl ranger. It has a head gasket leak that recently started. Rather than potentially waste time and money pulling the head my brother and I want to do a engine swap. what year range 3.0 are bolt on compatible with my 2005 ranger with the 5r55e trans? Perhaps even wiring harness aswell? Do I need to remove the entire front clip or just the radiator to do this? Thank you for reading!
Happy holidays
You have a 3.0l engine now, right?
You have a 5R44E transmission, not that it matters, just FYI
If so then 2001-2003 or 2007/2008 3.0l can be used, from a Ranger or Mazda B3000, last year for 3.0l was 2008
2WD or 4x4 doesn't matter
Gas only or Flex Fuel doesn't matter
2004 to 2006 3.0l engines could have faulty Valve seats, which is most likely the issue you have now, so avoid those years in used engines
Way easier to just change heads and head gaskets than doing an engine swap
For engine swap
You need to remove the hood and radiator
The Rad support is welded in so can't come out
Need an engine hoist
Engine swap is approx 18-20 hours if you have all the tools and equipment, used engines are a roll of the dice, might be buying someone else's problem, warranty doesn't cover labor
Head swap is approx. 6-8 hours if you have a torque wrench for reassembly, only "special tool" needed
Rebuilt or new head, not much can be wrong with one, so safe bet

While 2004-2006 were bad years for valve seat issues for the 3.0, other years still devoloped excessive seat wear with high mileage engines. My 2002 has this issue right now. Used 2004-2006 could have had replacement heads from Ford under warranty. No easy way to check though...
If your current engine is below 200k and the bottom end isnt knocking away and/or leaking oil out of every seal, id suggest replacing the head gaskets and have machine shop inspect the heads and clean them up. Yea I know, its more downtime for the truck, but its better than getting a used engine with issues...
