Icon5 Help diagnosing possible clutch issue(Video)

2000 Ranger XLT 3.0L RWD

My truck started making the noise in the video the other day, it does it whenever I disengage the clutch. I am just looking for some input and possibly verification before I start working on it. Ive checked out a few videos of people replacing their clutch on youtube. It looks pretty traight forward, I just dont want to invest a bunch of time and some money for specialty tools until I am able to confirm the issue.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

Just for clarity, when clutch pedal is down all the way clutch is disengaged, when your foot is off the pedal clutch is engaged???

Any way, when clutch pedal is down the Pilot bearing at the flywheel end of input shaft is being used, it supports the end of the shaft and allows the flywheel to stay at engine RPMs while the input shaft for transmission can slow down, so transmission(at 0 RPMs) can be put into gear
And at this time the Throwout bearing on the Slave cylinder also has full pressure on it, so pressure plate/flywheel can spin at engine RPMs while slave doesn't move

When clutch pedal is up pilot bearing is no longer needed, input shaft is now spinning at the same RPM as the flywheel, and clutch disc is clamped tight between flywheel and pressure plate so input shaft is supported
But the throwout bearing is now loose, no pressure on it, and if its failing then it can make a noise at this time

Pilot bearing would make a noise when clutch pedal is down
Throwout bearing can make a noise pedal down or up but usually up

Your noise, doesn't sound like either, but closer to pilot bearing noise than throwout bearing

But in the long run it doesn't matter, both would be replaced any time transmission is out, they are not expensive
You also need to check end play on input shaft

To clarify after reading the info you provided, this is happening when the clutch is being engaded, and does not occur when the clutch is fully engaded or disengaged. I only really hear it when I am at a stop and start moving from either 1st or 2nd. It may be happening at higher speeds but I am unable to hear it.

Thanks RonD.

Couple of tests you can do, read here: https://www.knowyourparts.com/techni...bushing-noise/

As said, in the long run you should pull transmission and look at the 2 bearings and replace them regardless, also check end play on input shaft because input shaft bearing can make noise if failing

RonD,

Thanks for the info, ill do whats recommended on the URL tonight when I get home.

I plan on pulling the transmission and replacing what is needed. I have a friend whos letting me borrow a transmission jack, and I have all the other tools minus the bearing puller so cost isnt much of a concern. Ill probably get started on it within the next few weeks and drive my other truck.

Thanks again for your help.
