Alright, first im not sure if i put this in the right forum or not... it really doesn't fall under anything lol

First off... 98 Ranger regular cab 4x4 5 speed... the old 3 slow under the hood.

I noticed this last year but it wasn't so prominate, but with the weather warming up i have the windows open on my truck. While driving, i get the smell of gas coming from my truck, its pretty strong too. It seams to be more so when im shifting but its pretty much all the time when driving. When the truck sits idle, or even parked i notice no gas nor do a notice a smell. I have no idea where its coming from since i don't have any signs of leaking gas other than the smell.

Also... i've noticed after driving a hissing sound from under the truck... maybe a vacumm leak or possibly an exhaust leak? its a annoying, and even my gf noticed it yesterday when i parked next to her car after driving.

Any ideas on either issue would be great! lol

Maybe you have some o-rings leaking

 

do a fuel system pressure test and check the fuel rail and injectors for leaks if their leaking you should see gas siting on top of the lower intake

 

if it is leaking around the engine

you better hope some of that fuel does not spray onto the exhaust manifold

or you will have a major truck fire on your hands

 

I'll check under the hood, i only smell it when im driving, and not all the time, just when it wants to. I drove all day today with the rear window open and only smelled it once.

As for the hissing sound under the truck... i usually only notice it after driving. I don't hear it when i go start it in hte morning to let it warm up, usually only hear it when i stop to check my mail when i get home from work.
