Low compression, need new motor?

I have 2 opposite side 50 psi piston compression from the shop, he suggested I need a new motor what years will fit a 2000 ranger 3.0?

Going to need more information. What were all the numbers and did they do a wet and dry test? Wet would be putting about a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder and then doing the test. It could just be valve issues which would be just pulling the heads and having them re-worked. I am always skeptical if a shop does a compression test and goes straight for engine replacement!!

For just the long block(block with heads), then 1986 to 2008 3.0l OHV will work
I would avoid 2004 to 2006 3.0ls because of exhaust valve seat issues

If you want plug and play then just a 1999/2000 will work, IF 8th digit of VIN is a match
U = gas only
V = Flex Fuel
They have different size injectors
So look at YOUR VIN to see which one you have

If you are willing to swap over your current intake and injectors then 1999 to 2008(skip 04-06) will work, U or V doesn't matter since you are swapping over to your injectors

Ford had TWO 3.0ls
3.0l OHV Vulcan engine
3.0l DOHC engine
Not interchangeable

Rangers/B3000s only used the OHVs

I agree with Rock304
99% of the time compression loss is an exhaust valve issue(especially on the 3.0l OHV), so pulling and repairing, or replacing, the heads is a better option than a used engine you know nothing about, or even a new/rebuilt engine

Shops make more money on engine swaps than head swaps

Its like bringing in your car because ashtray is full and having the shop say you need to buy a new car
Buying a new car WOULD solve the dirty ashtray issue for sure, can't argue that because it is 100% correct
But..................in this ridiculous example, just emptying the ashtray would be the more prudent path to try first, lol

Thanks a ton folks, I’ll see what the shop did and may try getting cylinder head for it.
