Working on the 1989 2.9L, i heard an obvious vacuum leak and found it at 5he pcv valve, or maybe its not a leak. This valve has two outlets, one that goes to the throttle body and a top port that doesn't seem to go anywhere, it was just sucking air. i put a cap over it but i want to double check first. does this go somewhere and i need to find a loose hose or is it supposed to be uncapped?
Alright capped it. Unless i find a hose somewhere that needs a vacuum for some reason i'll just put a new valve on the parts list that doesn't have a second port. The grommet feels kinda past its prime anyway.

i literally just did mine on my 93 3 liter today. The lower hose (the fat one) goes to the intake manifold. The upper hose (the one youre missing) goes to your charcoal canister, or vapor canister, or whatever you call it. On the 3 liter its mounted down between the driver headlight and battery and has a solenoid hooked into that vacuum line
That would make sense if you have an EVAP solenoid, but MUST have one, 1993 would/should, you don't want full vacuum to EVAP canister all the time, computer controls that solenoid
Otherwise the charcoal canister hooked up to Ported Vacuum(no solenoid needed), between throttle plate and air cleaner, usually there is a port under upper intake throat where the larger air tube connects, since its outside the throttle plate it is "ported" vacuum, it has little vacuum at low RPMs but it increases as RPMs do, it never gets as high as intake vacuum, and its not a "vacuum leak" per say
1989 may have it done that way
Going to double triple check in the morning. I just poured over the ford shop manual and it makes no mention of the PCV valve that i have been able to find (probably int he wrong section) But i did find two very telling diagrams. The 2.9L engine PCV is shown with jsut one outlet, while the 3.0L for the Aerostar clearly has two. I'm guessing this valve works fine in either if the top is capped. But again, i shall double check tomorrow for a solenoid or other lose hole. Now that i know what i'm looking for!
the aerostar 3 liter has to be mounted sideways so its accessories have to be routed differently. You're comparing apples to oranges. I would find a 3 liter ranger diagram and compare that instead. But yeah I would assume that you don't have an EVAP line on your pcv valve. you probably have the wrong pcv valve installed.
PCV Valves are all the same, because all engine vacuum is the same, for gasoline, size can vary to fit grommet
The dual outlet PCV valves usually come with a cap to seal off the smaller port, so are universal
Its like replacement radiators are all for automatics, if you have a manual trans you just don't hook up the trans cooler outlets, so its a universal radiator
So last time PCV valve was replaced a universal PCV Valve was used, thats often the only type parts stores stock for older models because no reason to stock both types
