Remove Engine and tranny Together

Remove Engine and tranny Together
Morning All, I am new here and new to the working guts of a Ranger. I have owned a couple of Rangers before but this is my first venture into rebuilding one.
I am rebuilding a '99, 2wd, 3.0 with auto tranny for my soon to be 16 grandson. We got this truck for almost nothing with body and interior in excellent condition.
However, the 3.0 engine is locked up, tight! That means I can't turn the crank to remove flex plate bolts. The question is can I remove the engine and tranny together or should I try to pull the torque converter with the engine?
TIA
Lilman

Welcome to the forum
Reads like a spun main bearing
Depends on your setup for lifting engine out, you really need two people(3 is better) to pull engine with trans attached out and up or you can damage other parts if trans or engine swings around
(I broke a windshield once, lol, wasn't funny at the time though)
It won't hurt anything to pull trans out and off with torque converter attached to flexplate, you just can't install a trans that way because front pump needs to be lined up/seated to torque converter tabs
Lots of ATF in torque converter so as engine tilts back it will run out and make a mess, after trans is off stuff a rag in the torque converter to prevent that, and/or duct tape it "real good"
So whatever seems easier for you

Thanks Ron!
I have all sorts of lifting devices, just hadn't really gotten under it to see if it was physically possible.
Ditto on leaving the TC intact, again not familiar with the tranny, didn't want to risk bending or damaging the tranny input shaft. I am familiar with the mess a TC can make, had a 7.3 powerstroke TC slip out of my hand and dump upside down, tranny fluid everywhere.
Thanks again!

You may want to pull off the upper intake and pull out the Cam Synchronizer at the back top of the engine, because you will need to lower the back of the engine down enough to get clearance for bell housing to slide off past the torque converter.
Never done a Ranger this way so can't say for sure
