Engine swap/P0453 code

What’s up forum friends?
My name is Chris, I’m new to the forum.

I have a 04 Level2 Ranger.

I recently swapped the 4.0 engine with an 06 Explorer 4.0. I swapped out all the external components with the exception of the fuel injectors, I had two injectors that didn’t cooperate with me while removing them from the original engine, so I decided to run the Explorer injectors, which are a different part number.

Engine runs great with the injectors, but I’m getting a P0453 code, which I have never had any codes at all with the EVAP, and the only code that I keep getting is the P0453.

I did change the FTPS but no change. I’m still trouble shooting the EVAP system. I do have 5.02 volts on the number 1&3 terminals at the FTPS, I have 12v at the purge valve, and 12v at the solenoid on the canister. The fuel cap is fairly new, and I haven’t found any apparent vacuum leaks.

This is a crazy question, but, could the Explorer injectors be causing me this issue? I only ask because I didn’t have this issue before the engine swap, and the only thing that I didn’t swap out is the injectors.

any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to get my inspection done, but it won’t pass with this code.

Thanks for any help!

P0453 = Evap Emission Control System Pressure Sensor High Input. This is from a list found through a Google search.
If "FTPS" means Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor, my question would be if you bought a cheap one.

The sensor that I purchased is a Dorman brand. My sensor is inline rather than on the tank, so I had to purchase a kit with hoses. Nice quality kit, but the voltage readings were the same before the change. According to All-Data, if the voltage is correct then the sensor is the problem. Not so in my case

Unplug the sensor
Clear computer codes
Go for a drive
Code should change to P0450 or 451
P0450 Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Malfunction
P0451 Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Range/Performance

If you still get P0453 then its a computer issue

Anytime you have codes its good to do a "sanity" test for the computer, code list here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...trouble_codes/

Thanks Ron
I’ll give that a try when I get home tonight and let you know from there.

Does a reprogram on the computer typically fix this problem, or should I plan on getting another computer for my Ranger?

Software update may help, but.....................

It's possible one of the sensor wires is the issue

Or the connector at the PCM(computer)

Pressure sensor should have 3 wires
Brown/white, Reference ground or 5v, shared with brown/white wire at Throttle Sensor, pin 90 on PCM connector
Grey/red, reference, shared by most other sensors, including throttle sensor, pin 91 on PCM

Red/pink wire is what PCM uses to "see" the pressure, it runs to pin 62 on PCM

You don't have Throttle sensor codes so I would "assume" Brown/white and grey/red wires are OK, but...............you could test both, key off with OHM meter, should be 0 OHMs between both wire ends when unplugged, could be the splice used to "share" the wire is failing
Or both should show exactly the same volts or ground, key on and unplugged

Red/pink wire can only be tested with PCM connector unplugged and with OHM meter, 0 OHMs between the 2 ends, so wire from sensor to PCM is OK

There are some connectors and exposed wires under the vehicle that can degrade over time
And in the engine bay to get to the PCM, all the wires were moved and pulled back out of the way to get new engine swapped in, and these wires are 18 years old
