Air box mod problems

I just recently did the air box mod and I am noticing a problem. When I start my truck up is seems like it wants to stall. Like its not getting enough air. What do I do to fix this?

i did the air box mod to mine as well but havent noticed the same type of problem. The 4.0 seems to be a weird starter at times. I can't see why the air box mod would cause it to stall though....im sure there's alot of guys that know more then me....hopefully they'll chime in. ill have to keep an eye on mine and see if it starts doing th same thing.

What "air box mod" did you do? Just taking the snorkel out? There's no way that's the problem.

However, did you also go to an oiled filter? Or did you have one? You might be pulling more air which forced oil out and onto your MAF.

That seems most likely: a fouled MAF. I would clean it and see what happens.

It could also be a completely unrelated problem. At actual idle, the airbox mod doesn't change the air flow, and wouldn't cause any change AT ALL.

I agree with Griggs,

if you've got a K&N and got oil happy, it may have muffed up your MAF

or the IAC. since it says K&N filter in his sig that is prolly what it is.

i would clean both the MAF and the IAC with some electric parts cleaner and see what that does for you.

Are they sensors of some sort. Do I need to unplug them before I clean them or can I spray them with electric parts cleaner when they are on the truck.

Airbox mod my eye!!! He has no airbox anymore. That's a full intake replacement, lol.

I think oil from the filter is you problem. The MAF has elements in it that need cleaning. Use "carb and choke" cleaner and spray it down good and shake it off. Let it dry.

You can just take the MAF out and spray into it, or take out the sensor using the two T20 security torx screws that hold the sensor into the MAF body.

Edit: Oh, wait, that's YOUR intake, isn't it, Zach...nevermind. Still, the oil is an issue. I thought that was a picture of his intake, lol.

take them off the truch and clean them, you need to remove the intake to do it.

the oil from your k&n filter has made them dirty and now they read wrong.

Make sure the small rubber/plastic hose is still connected to the intake tube.

It is very easy to create a leak when working around the airbox. Any unmetered air that enters downstream of the MAF will cause a lean condition with possible poor idling, hesitation or stalling.

Check to be sure that the black plastic PCV closure tube is connected at both ends and that there is no leak where the intake tube is clamped on.

It's a good thought. I don't know about the 4.0, but where the PCV plugs onto the engine on the 3.0 is an o-ring push fitting -- not latched AT ALL. Properly installed it stays seated.

However, mine came loose and I offroaded with it that way and had dirt inside the hole where it plugs in -- not recommended, especially for mud and water!

I think I fixed the problem. There is a plastic hose that sticks out after the MAF. It was not plugged in. It is working good so far, so I will let you guys know if anything else happens.

Yes, that is the closure tube for the PCV system. Reinstalling it should take care of your problem.

sometimes called a small rubber/plastic hose. Haha.

Glad you got it fixed. I did that about a month ago. It threw an engine code which I scanned. I actually thought I had a bad maf sensor and was swapping two out between two Rangers to rule that component out. Then I saw it and was like.... no way!

So carb cleaner is okay to spray on the electrical harnesses to clean them?

I need to clean mine this weekend.

Well, I'm not talking the harness here -- ordinary cleaners for that. This is the sensor INSIDE the housing I'm referring to cleaning.

I normally use CRC cleaner or anything labeled sensative electronic cleaner..
I heard carb cleaner is bad... but then again what do I know. Of course I use the
electronic cleaner all the time in my job so buying carb cleaner is a waste for me anyway.

Yeah I use the Brak-Kleen electric safe. I used it on all kinds of stuff like cleaning the tranny before re-installing the pan. I got a lil weary after seeing a hundred wires coated in mercon V. Anyways, I also used it on my maf. Didn't do anything lol. I don't think it was dirty and it didn't damage anything apparently.

MAF's are self-cleaning -- within limits. They use current pulses to heat the wires and burn off contamination. But if there's too much it just chars on there.
