Gaugin interest in upgraded Cam
I'd be all about 2 cams for $300 or even $350. Make them work with the stock springs and you have a winner. These are trucks so they don't have to be too wild. The wilder stuff will be more for the V6 Mustang crowd. Do it please!
You would be suprised how well a mild cam will work out. I am not sure about the capability of the stock valve springs (new or low mileage), but there are quite a few modular V8 cams that work with stock springs. Of course a spring change is not that big of a deal. It just adds to the cost and complexity of the install.

lol well i have been talking to them today and we are looking at a 210-215 adv. dur. at .050..... which they say will be perfect for the motor.. probably a little bit more duration on the exhaust just to make it sound sweet(hehe) but i am just trying to keep people updated... and the install at a shop is looking like 700 bucks... so realistically its gonna be like a 1000.00 dollar total upgrade unless you do it yourself..
and also when they grind a cam that dont have to grind it to be super huge lift or anything wild. i completely understand what you are talking about nick. but i have already told him that i have to use stock internals on the heads. And he assured me that i would be able to use everything inside....
also, Nick why do you have to use the cobra springs? just curious

so comp cams is considering doing regrinds just like super six?
Nickster, can you easily pull the heads while the motor stay sin the truck?
I was thinking of milling the heads but the timing will be off dangit. Considering all the weaknesses of the ranger 4.0, I may just wait to find a good shape 4.6 or 5.4 to swap in with a new tranny and rear end. Would be a nice reliable 300 horses, plus it may get the same or better mpg than I get now.

What I ment was how much **** is in the way to get the valve covers off?
According to all data it pays 6.4 hours to replace the camshafts. (or 4.6 warrenty work).... Thats nothing at all to be honest. I could have it done in probably 3-4 hours to be honest. However I have the tools at our shop to do it.
I am still interested in seeing actual performance numbers. I assume you need a tune from Doug also to make sure all goes well. I mean even you people talking about removing the radiator is damn crazy!
Show realworld numbers, and maybe make a sound clip and if all is well im sold! Other wise Im just buying a supercharger.

The cams I have are .500 lift and 255 duration. I am using the 1.86 rockers. The overall lift is too much for the stock springs, they will collapse, plus I am turning 8,000 rpms.
As far as completing this job in a couple hours..... Make a vid, I will watch the whole thing.

You can pull the heads in the vehicle(unless you have head studs like I), the only problem is: there is a jackshaft plug on the rear of the block that is pretty much "inside" the bellhousing of the tranny when the engine is still in that has to be removed to gain access to the gear for the rear chain. this is no simple feat, trust me, you try to do this once with the engine in the truck, you will learn really quick how to remove it!!!

crane does the regrinds for super six. milling the heads will only cause you problems. i cant stress enough that milling heads on an OHC setup will cause the timing to be ever so slightly off and if you dont have access to the cam doctor for OHCs, you are SOL... The stock compression on a 4.0SOHC is 9.7:1 so i wouldnt recommend it for that reason as well. The pistons seem to be the weak point in this engine so raising the compression will only hurt you...

So we are talking 10-12 more ft lbs of torque? What about horsepower? Will the torque be lower in the Rpm range? 1000 dollars isn't a bad price, but I need a little more details. What about the mileage, will it be affected?

you can get the supercharger for 4500, that is 3500 extra max, that shop is going to raise their 1000$ price tag once they do one install. If you listen to what Nick is saying they will have to pull the engine, or they will wish they did.
Not to mention you have no idea how much the CAMs will even help if they will help at all.

if you got 15hp at 1000 the EE gives 60hp at 4000, the cost is roughly the same of the amount of power...
ok but the kit costs 4300.00 bucks and thats a heck of alot of money and the cam is something that defiantely helps with all the rest of the mods... and again it will help if i were to ever buy a super charger.. and IMO why not. its something different
