give the glasspack time to break in... as it loses some of the fiberglass it should get louder

They do silence noise, not by design. But they do just because of how its made. Ever seen one cut in half?

Any body got a pic of one cut in half?

Uh, it's fiberglass and there is a tube full of holes running down the center. All your hammer will do is put dents in the outside. The noise you hear will be the hammer whacking dents into your muffler.

After a while glasspacks will get a little louder after they break in. I had them for a couple of years, but switched mufflers because it was to loud for me.

After you run them a while the glass kind of packs up against the outside and glazes over on the inside. It's almost like running a straight pipe...very loud. I still don't think the hammer will do you all that much good, but whack away and let us know the results.
