From: Coal Region, MTC to be exact...heart of the coal region.
only way to raise mpg is to raise engine efficeny. make the engine more efficent at burning the same amount of fuel and u'll see an mpg increase...an intake doesnt adhear to this rule.

This info kinda bums me out, a performance intake kit was going to be the first mod on my truck. I think I'll still get one thought, for the power increase and/or coolness when the hood is opended.

Could it be that your using the model of K&N? The 57 is only good until your model number. Its completely differnt from the newer cool air intakes for 2003+ rangers. Thats the only thing i can think of.

Air intake is measured by weight (pounds). The fuel/air ratio is 1:14. More pounds air in, the more pounds of fuel required. Mods to improve breathing are "efficiency" gains; more power per crankshaft revolution, so naturally, they're going to use more fuel.

If you just added your intake, the fuel injection will take about 10 trips to recalibrate.

You might see improvements by doing maintenance on the fuel injection system: if you have more than 50,000 miles, you should replace both O2 sensors. If you use a K&N, clean the MAF element (use electronic contact cleaner, any residue will ruin it). Clean out the IAC (idle air control valve at the throttle butterfly)
