Need a a/c part and dont want to go to the dealer

so my a/c crapped out and took to a local guy who i know and trust and he found that there is a leak in what he called the "a/c core" and described it as a cube like radiator by the firewall and told me that he couldn't get one aftermarket and i'd need one form the dealer which is over $600. He's looking at it now to see if it can be repaired. Has this happened to anyone else before and am i out of luck an have to get a dealer part?
Thanks in advance for any input!
