Pinging

The engine is pinging, when warmed up, not over heating, tried different gases, when driving I can hear it when I accelerate, so I back it off so it doesnt, its hard to hear when in the open, but next to the divider I can hear it, I am not familiar with timing on the dis system. Does the truck require more than 87 octane? Or is there another issue?

i feel like mine does this too and its just a whistle when the air gets sucked into the engine. mine sounds almost as if i have a throttle body spacer on it the way it whistles/pings or what have you. i dont think its an issue.

Pinging can be caused by the EGR system, carbon build up, or excessive timing advanced... My truck (which I've only have for 3 weeks now) does ping a little bit under light throttle. If you have a lot of pinging, a bit of Seafoam to clean out the cylinders or going to a higher octane may help. But I think a small amount is normal.

no whistle, It is preignition ping, it happened a little more today, I am figuring a tank of bad fuel, and what controls timing in a dis system?

My truck pings at a very specific throttle position/load condition, its been doing it for years. I've learned to avoid that throttle/load condition. I have tried to replace everything from plugs and egr and even temporarily swapped MAF sensors with a friend. I have an XCal and it pings with the 91 setting, both 87 settings, and stock...even stock with 91 octane. Nothing has ever fixed the issue and it used to drive me crazy, but the truck runs great otherwise so it doesn't bother me anymore.

Problem solved. Bad "COUPLE" of tanks of gas, the station I usually go to has bad gas, I got some down the road and ran great today. No pinging.

I experience the same phenomenon in my 04 4.0... When I run premium 91 or 93 it goes away... sometimes the ping is so bad it sounds like my engine is going to explode can't be a good thing
