Pulling CEL Codes

Hi. I'm a newbie here. I have a 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4 Manual tranny. I popped a CEL today and want to pull the codes but I don't know how and have not been able to find the appropriate bit of info on the forum so far. Any help appreciated.

Welcome to the forum

For 1995 and up Rangers you need to use an "OBD2 reader"

Most auto Parts stores will read codes for free, WRITE THEM DOWN!!!

If you have a "Smart Phone", you can buy a Bluetooth OBD2 reader, for $15-$35 with extension cable, $5
ELM327 is a popular choice

This plugs into the OBD port in the cab
And then you can view codes on your Phone or Tablet via Bluetooth, APP for this is FREE or $5

You can also watch LIVE data which can be handy

OBD = on board diagnostics

All vehicles sold in North America, not just made, SOLD in North America, were required by law to use OBD2 from 1996 onward
So this is not a Ford thing, any OBD2 reader will work on all vehicles 1996 and newer

Not a bad investment.................if you drive, lol

Thanks, RonD. Stopped by an AutoZone and they pulled PO442. Something about the "evap" valve?

EVAP = evaporative emission control system, no not a acronym, lol, just short for "evaporative"

This is an important emissions system, well important to the Feds and most States, it will NOT effect driving or engine operation

EVAP is for your gas tank
When engine is started the EVAP system uses engine Vacuum to suck the air out of the gas tank so gas fumes from the gas sloshing around while driving doesn't pollute the air outside
Air is sucked through a charcoal canister to filter it

When you shut the engine off the EVAP holds pressure in the gas tank for awhile, 30 minutes maybe
If you stop for gasoline you may have heard the "whooosh" when you opened the gas cap, thats air rushing INTO the gas tank because it has negative pressure inside from EVAP system

P0442 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)

Usual suspects are leaky Filler Tube, where you put gas in, the rubber hose gets cracks
Gas caps can go bad, they do have a vent inside and a rubber gasket.

And there are a few hoses to check which can be a pain
The code means the gas tank is not holding negative pressure, small leak happens when EVAP tests the gas tank

Ford Codes seen here: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li...II_codes.shtml

There are ALOT of EVAP Codes
Which is why you should ALWAYS look up codes on the Full List, like above, never "Google" a code first

The computer can use any one or two or three of these codes, it used P0442
So the codes it didn't use are also helpful, to tell you what's NOT the problem with the EVAP system
i.e. its not the purge valve, or the vent or the sensor, lol
