why? you will need wiring, the matching PATS system for the new motor (keys), computer, throttle cable. you shouldn't have to swap trans, as the ohv and sohc can swap, it's just one bolt different.

A novices opinion… sell the OHV 4.0 and buy a decent low milage SOHC 4.0.
Why… bolt in, no wiring hassles , no exhaust hassles, everything should be a go.

I know you said you had the OHV 4.0 already but just because you do isn’t always the best approach.
Even if money is tight why put yourself through the grief and aggravation, put back what came out and you have all of the pieces except the motor.

luck,

p.s. both motors are OHV, just one has the cam(s) in a different place.

The 99 PATS is completely different from 2001 and needs different transponder keys snd a different transceiver module on the column. Then you need to add the stand alone 99 PATS Module (the corresponding functions of this module were built in as part of the 2001 PCM but it goes away with the swap). Custom wiring is necessary to string it all together. If all of the PATS parts and the PCM do not come from the same 99 donor vehicle, then programming using a dealer tool would be necessary to make them work together.

The 99 Ex PCM would also require a change to how the speedometer is read and corrected. 2001 does the correction in the PCM but, again, that goes away with the swap.

If you don't already have them, you'd need the 99 engine/transmission wiring harness and maybe the exhaust Y-pipe too. Possible differences in peripherals like power steering hoses and A/C hoses.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. There may be more.

Icon13 DO NOT OVERCOMPLICATE SWAPS CAUSE YOU HAVENT TRIED IT

Hold the phone everyone.

You can do your swap without all the issues listed above PATS, has absolutely no effective change with your truck UNLESS changing your PCM over, Everyone over complicates all this stuff, quite frankly you can swap a 5.0 into a expo or ranger provided you had a v6 have enough common sense to know that your only added difference between a sohc motor and a 5.0 is 2 cylinders so you gotta compensate for that by wiring in 2 extra injector pigtails, And yes. I have a 1999 expo sport 4.0 sohc / 5r55e 4x4 with a 5.0ohv swapped into it and the only thing i had to change was add two pigtails and swap my 4x4 actuator over with a 30a rocker switch to de-energize it, AND yes folks thats alll on my $.0 sohc ecm and Gem, Amazing isnt it? and as for the whole OHV and SOHC horror, in two weeks time ill have the official full parts needed list for it but I have a 98 original 4.0ohv 2wd m50dr1, and ive put a 2001 late year 4.0 sohc from a 4x4 automatic in it, havent changed anything PCM or harness wise, same 98 ignition, and yes, I have ran it for about 20 mins so far, fired first crank on second attempt, pressure reguklator was bad

And please Im not ranting on anyone or saying you dont know anything about anything but so many people say Sell it and buy the other or do this or that, personally, my favorite off the 2 is a SOHC, i think the OHV is garbage, but Ill gladly pick up a wrench and lend anyone a hand on there OHV as proudly as if it were mine because......

ITS BETTER TO KNOW AND TEACH THAN NOT KNOW AND PREACH

Welcome to the forum

Interesting post
And what did you do about spark?
V6 sparks every 120deg, V8 every 90deg

Injectors were never an issue, you can run any engine on one injector, carb conversions did

The 4.0l PCM does the fuel mix math for 4 LITERS of air every 2 rpm, and it would be incorrect if there were 5 LITERS of air coming in, MAF could compensate but would have constant lean codes, the larger V8 injectors would help

All in all not sure you would be better off trying to make a 4.0l PCM work with a 5.0l engine, or just using a 5.0l PCM and wiring harness
PATS is not that big a deal

You CAN do anything, thats not in question, its more of "is it worth the trouble" if all you want is the V8 working in your Ranger
