Swapping out 96' v6 4.0L OHV 5speed with a better V6
Swapping out 96' v6 4.0L OHV 5speed with a better V6
I know it sounds stupid but just amuse this tard.
I have a 1996 Ford ranger Xlt V6 4.0L OHV 5 speed 4x4 with 200k. I want to upgrade to a newer model v6 or v8(302) that will fit into my 96'.
Which year and model was the best for v6-v8?I love this truck and I want it to last. I know it would be smarter just to buy a newer truck but I don't want to.

Welcome to the forum
The 2001-2011 4.0l SOHC Ranger engines were rated at 207HP running Premium fuel, 185HP on Regular
Its the same block as your current 4.0l OHV(160HP) so your motor mounts and transmission would work
You would need 2001-2003 4.0l SOHC computer(with keys) and engine wiring harness, 2004-2011 computer wouldn't work
You should change the 2 long timing chain cassettes and tensioners while engine is out
Not many have done this swap, can't remember any actually, lol, but I am sure its been done, so you would be on your own for wiring and fuel system changes
The 302/5.0l V8 swap would be better, IMO, from a 1996-2001 V8 Explorer, need to swap computer and wiring harness AND transmission/transfer case swap
But "there is no replacement for displacement"
215HP(regular gas) but ALOT more torque
And you have a V8 Ranger in the end
This swap has been done many times so loads of info around for wiring and fuel system
Other V6 or V8 engines with OHC are just too wide to fit into Ranger engine bay, its a tight squeeze between heater box and steering shaft in engine bay
The 5.0l OHV V8 is only 19" wide, so it fits but barely, later model V8s and V6s with OHC are 26"-30" wide
