Thumping at 2500 rpm

Thumping at 2500 rpm while in drive but not park, and check gage light on seemingly randomly? Any ideas?

What Year Ranger?

Check Gauge light or Check engine light?

But reads like transmission issue if it only makes the noise in gear
Has the OD OFF light ever flashed while driving?
That indicates transmission codes were set and are in memory
