Transfer case control module / Shift control motor - replaced

4x4 engagement has been iffy for the last 7-8 months or so. Did the "remove & replace fuse" a few times and it kicked in a few times. The last couple of weeks that did not work any more. First I replaced the shift module with no change. A day later (today) I replaced the transfer case shift motor and bingo! All good again. Because I purchased a Dorman shift motor I had to modify the steel bracket that the wire harness plugs in to, no big deal. I have read that others have had to do the same. Strange they didn't get that aligned up with the OEM motor. My bet is that the module was fine but no way of telling now. It has a new one now. Pretty easy DIY job.

I have only put about 9,500 miles on the Ranger since the rebuilt engine 17 months ago and it is running well. Besides the 4x4 issue I have had nothing go wrong with it.
Extremely dependable ride.

Good info

The shift motor works/fits on most electric shift Borg Warner transfer cases, 1990-2011 Rangers, but also Explorers and F-series trucks, so hookup can be different based on model and year of vehicle

The 4x4CM module from 2001 to 2011 was a known issue so good to start there, there is no real "test" for them, save the other one, it may come in handy, and I might just swap it with new one, first to see if it works, and second to keep the new one in reserve, just in case, for future issue or testing

Truth be told Ron, the core charge on the old module was $190.00 but the price for the replacement was only 179.99. I did not keep the old one, I gave it to the vendor (Orielly's) when I made the purchase. If I had the original module you can bet that I would have hooked it up to see if it was still good. Problem is that one I took the tape off of the openings of the connections (new) it voided the return anyway.
Now I understand the reason the bracket needed modifying.
Thanks Ron!
