302 in 2002 Ranger

I am thinking about putting a 302 in my 2002 ranger. I figure an explorer would be the best canadate. My truck is a stick shift. I was wondering when I find a explorer with a 302 in it. What would be the best manual trans to mate to the engine? Also, I was wondering would the explorer engine mounts bolt up to the ranger? Also, is there really that much work other than wiring, like welding or cutting of my ranger? Thanks.

As long as you pass the sniff test, the engine is from a newer year of the same company and was offered in a similar modle you are A-ok.

So a v8 out of an explorer that is newer than your truck that passes the sniff test = ok

Luckily, I live in Fl....so if I ever run in to 15k I'll have the worlds one and only LS3 Mazda B3000

you would be better off with a 4.6 out of the same year to help pass emssons in gwinnett county and as far as the tranny i would go with a mustang tranny or equal because i dont think your tranny will work

I don't think the 5.0s came in 02 Expos so he wouldn't past inspections.

Yep. you're right. I checked on that. the 5.0 explorer was from 1999 to 2001 and they have a new Scanning tool out now that reads the VIN number that is burned into the ECU. If it doesn't match it's consider track use only. Plus you were indeed right about the wiring. 2002 was when alot of the new emissions changes were enforced namely the EGR Valve became mandatory, catalytic converters became more advanced and swap laws started popping up all over the country. here in VA,CA, NY and a few other states has to be the same year or newer.

They have companies that will reburn the stock engines computer for you, making it pass inspection. Its legal too, not some hack job thing. In NC it has to be the same year or newer but the VINs don't have to match.
