I say for the price to do the swap you could rebuild the 4.0 and do a few performance mods to it and have a nice power plant without custom wiring....

You know what, a 4.0 isn't bad. But you can't beat the sound of a 5.0 or a 4.6. It just plain rocks!

I will try to dig up some pictures. My picture site is giving my troubles by postin red "x" instead of my picture links.

As for the computer, you need to use an explorer V8 eec-v. That is compatible with your truck. I would really recommend getting a complete wrecked explorer V8 and pop that engine in. You can leave stock, modify, heck, even stroke to 347 or supercharge. The 351W is definitely more powerful, but alot of additional work. Do the 302 for now - really a pretty straight forward swap without a whole lot of wiring as everyone seems to think. Check out the stickys on the RPS V8 board. Plenty of detail there fo you. You definitely have an advantage over the others by not haveing to worry about the IFS mounts, so you can fit some nice sized headers and wake up the 302!

I hope you plan on putting some money inot some performance goodies, otherwise it is a waste of money. If memory serves a late 80's 351 is something like 210 HP Granted is is 310 Ft lbs of torque at 2800 (Very decent numbers for 1990 but for today it is not that impressive), but still very minimal gains for the amount of work involved just to get **** poor gas mileage.

I was REALLY thinking about this a while ago, but with all the hassle of doing a 351, a 302 is 'easier' and you can get some very nice numbers out of a 302.

In the initial note, I mentioned the need for a tune to account for the cubes.

No, you can use a 4406 F150/expedition case with the 4R70W trans. Otherwsise, you can have AWD with the explorer 4404.

Or you can get an adapter to run yer 1354 ranger T-case from AA(advanced adapters) that will bolt onto the back of watever trany you use. C4, AOD, 4R70W

example..

I used a 4406 from a 03 F-150. bigger case and can handle more torque.

From: Coal Region, MTC to be exact...heart of the coal region.
351s had E4OD or C6 automatics behind them...the gAyOD would puke itself behind a 351. some of the late 351/autos could have been a 4R70w but a 1990 would be E4OD or C6 with a BW-13-56 t-case attatched.

performance parts for a 351 are no more then for a 302, its essentially the same engine and quite a few parts will interchange.
