5.0 is quite a bit easier by the sounds of it, kinda, your 04 will be difficult no matter what.

5.4L probably wont fit between the frame rails or under hood. it is an extremely tight fit on my truck and i dont even have a ranger frame, let alone a stock front axle or 8.8. the 5.4L specifically a DOHC is 36" tall roughly. The thing would be skying out of the hood.

The 5.0 is the clear winner here for ease but the 5.4DOHC sure would be badass. The 5.4DOHC will fit but you better be a good fabercater to do it.

I would just go the 5.0 route.....You can get just as much..if not more power with certain mods! But..If you have plenty of time and money the 5.4 would be unique and BadAss! I had a 5.4 drivetrain laying around before I did my swap, but I didnt have that much time or money to invest in all the Fab work that was required.

Especially a supercharged 5.4 out of a lightning.

But yeah the 5.0 is shorter and skinnier than the 5.4. And if you get a 5.0 out of an exploder, they are a lot easier to be installed from what I heard.

How does the 4.6 compare in size to the 5.0 and 5.4?

Its a little wider than the 5.0.....not a real issue....but the Wiring is alot harder to sort out.

yeah the 5.0 fits right into the ranger, using the same motor mounts. as well as the transmission mounts as well the main thing that would give you trouble is keeping it a manual. you would have to get a transmission out of an early f150 or something like that i think one of those would bolt right up to it.

1" narrower than a 5.4, hight is a little shorter. I would still say its significantly larger than the 5.0

The wiring is no problem now as there is an aftermarket wiring harness that has just a few wires to hook up and its ready to start. Here is the link to it.

LS motors have been out since 98 fyi, its hard to compare 2 motors that are 13 years apart imo. And btw, the supercharged ls9 still puts out more power than the gt500

you really wouldnt be gaining much by putting that into your ranger...the 4.0 makes as much if not more power than the 5.0...

The 5.0 Ex is rated at 210~215 HP, most EFI 5.0 Mustangs (except Cobras) are rated at 205~225. 4.0L SOHC Rangers are rated at 207.

Horsepower is a derived number, not measured directly, and is proportional to torque X RPM. Any engine that breathes better at high R's will have a built in advantage for the max HP number. Comparing the peak horsepower numbers of two engines looks at one point in each curve and ignores the rest.

Just remember that the average stock EFI 5.0 makes about 50 lb-ft more peak torque than the 4.0 SOHC in the Ranger. Peak horsepower definitely means something but it is only part of the story.

The stock Explorer engine is not a performance driver's dream but it is a good basis for mods. The truth is that the Ex 5.0 is basically a detuned Cobra Mustang engine with truck cam duration/lift and a bad set of exhaust manifolds. So the potential is definitely there and the 5.0 aftermarket is huge compared to that of the 4.0.

The "easiest" would be the 99~01 Explorer 5.0 which is not to say that it would be easy, especially if it is to remain a manual 4x4.
