97 5.0 4x4

Hey guys im new to the forum and i just wanted to say hi and ask my simple question. Right now i have a 4.0 5speed with a mechanical 4x4 transfercase. What im hoping exsists and to here from you all is, what manual transmission and mechanical transfer case can i use that would keep the shifters in the same positions they are now? i like the locations so i would like to keep it that same. And if not is there a combo that would require minimal fabrication of cutting?
Thanks guys! Looking forward to your responses.

Hi,

I believe the parts from a '97-'04 F-150 4x4 with 4.2l V6(same bolt pattern as 5.0l) would be your best bet.

They used the M5OD-R2 manual, a heavy duty version of your R1, it also came with optional manual BW4406 transfer case, R2 shifter is only about 2" difference from R1, not sure on the transfer case shifter.
The BW4406 is wider than the BW13xx in your Ranger, but will fit, best method seems to be moving the engine/trans/transfer case over 1/2" to the right.

There are a few "how-tos" on the M5OD-R2 and BW4406 going into Rangers.

Ok that sounds good. So basically installing those would come close to the stock location? And if I modded the engine some would that work (be strong enough)?

Yes on the trans shifter location, you will have to check on transfer case shifter, and yes on the power/torque, the M5OD-R2 was used with V8s, and used up to 2011 with turbo-diesels.
The early version, 1988-1996, were used in F-150s and full size broncos with I6 and 5.0l, but shifter is farther forward, I have read that you can replace the shift tower on the older R2 with the shift tower from the '97+, but don't know for sure??
