v8 in a 2004

where to buy it from. I know it'll have to be a 04 or newer motor i'm just having no luck finding where I could buy it from. It woukd be a while before this happens. However never hurts to find the info in advance.

The only late model Ford V8 that fits easily into a Ranger is the 302. It went out of production in 2001. FRPP sold the leftover Explorer 302's as crate engines but those are long gone.

Find a rolled 98-00 Ford explorer (eddie bauer edition believe).

Then swap in engine.

Commit suicide before you turn the key. It'll be better knowing you put a V8 in your truck and it could have run then turning the key and having to deal with PATs.

For you yes yes yes! Very easy. Search member "tmsoko" he made a thread about it. Easy easy easy. Need engine + tranny + tcase + driveshaft. Easiest option is rolled explorer.

Length of engine i believe. I think heater core is definately in the way and you might have to cut a little firewall.

it's also a very wide engine, the heads on those 4.6L's take up some serious room..isnt there a law that states that you have to have the same year engine or newer as a replacement?

Depends what state you're in, and down to regions also. Up north in two big cities here, you follow that law. My city has no restrictions here.

Doesn't the likes of summit and jegs still sell 302 crate engines? or beings that they aren't explorer 302s make it a more complex install?

Ok, I would like to know some info on this as well. I know where there is another 4wd edge sitting with a blown engine and I know of a built 302 that a race shop wants gone for really really cheap. Is it possible to put a 302 in a newer model ranger?

It's possible to put the motor into the truck, but to get through emissions, it's nearly impossible. They test vehicles from 98 on up through your on-board computer. At least in maryland, I think it's like that in most states. You can get around that by programming the vehicle computer to give false codes to the emissions computer, if that's possible.

OR figure if there's a way to bribe someone. My plan if i moved up back north was if ever pulled over I would tell the cops i am driving through, even though I was a college student..

It really really pisses me off that it is illegal to mess with engines in a lot of places. So what? I can see if you put a 70s engine into a truck how that could be bad, but honestly, "take an engine out, put an engine in" doesn't magically increase emissions. That 5.0 explorer was once zippin around polluting too, as well as my 3.0.

When Ford made the decision to install the 302 into the existing Explorer in the mid 90's, they had to make some special parts like a compact FEAD and timing cover, a special oil pan, different intake pieces and some really strange exhaust manifolds. All of these parts are exclusively Explorer and they allow the Ex 302 to be the best fit in 98+ Rangers.

if there is no restriction on emissions in your area then the only thing holding you back is ability and money. which may or may not be a problem, but you shoudl do it!!!!!

Wow. Lucky! I have to wait until my truck turns historic before I can do any of that.

Would it be possible to get a 302 short block and swap the necessary explorer parts on?

I don't know about emissions here in TX, because even if there are any, I don't have to worry about them. I know local shops that don't even test emissions (I honestly don't know if they should be). And one of the shop owners is a friend of mine.
