A different Header question

I know the hole story behind the torque monster headers with the V8 swap cuz the EXP 5.0 uses gt40P heads and the funky spark plug angle. lets say someone was building a hybrid mustang 302/exp 302 and used regular gt40 heads could this person use a "block hugger" header for the 302 fit the frame rails steerin etc???.. ps its 2wd not 4wd

Some guys have used the Shelby Tri-Y headers on some trucks.

Also some use the headman headers. There are quite a few different ones you could use.

What year truck you working with?

Nope... Torque monster or custom is your only way... or start buying every set of 5.0 headers you can find. you could possibly piece together a pair.

Your listing is no longer on eBay.

You are out of luck finding a set of headers to fit aside from TM or custom. I tried several pairs of headers and nothing was even close. Biggest issues were the upper a-arm mount, steering column, HVAC box, and frame rails. If there was something out there for the 1998+ trucks, everyone would have them.

theres got to be some header out there that will work with reg gt40 heads. i mean 760 bucks for the TM headers is more than the engine itself!

Somebody mentioned custom (your own design). Probably quite a bit cheaper then the TM's.

Register at www.explorerforum.com. As a member, you will get about $100 off. Mine were $624 but I don't know if the prices is still the same. Just send a PM on E-F to Bob Pasquale (RCPASQ) to set up the purchase. The headers are very high quality and Bob is a good guy to work with.

The only other off-the-shelf headers that will fit the engine bay were sold by Ford Racing and they were not very good, only a little better than the severely compromised factory manifolds.

Torque Monster Headers vs stock production stainless Ex manifolds:

NOT EVEN CLOSE! I have WELL over $800 in my custom headers and they aren't even stainless! The TM headers are excellent choice for most of the V8 ranger builders.

So do the 'regular' Torque Monster headers fit in our (1994, 2"body life) Rangers? What about the new Headers on the TM website specifically for Rangers? Any information greatly appreciated. I've just come into my first V8 Ranger, and I'm suffering from an exhaust leak already :)

The original TMH were designed specifically for 5.0 Explorers and these fit 98+ Rangers perfectly because the engine compartment dimensions are almost identical.

I believe that the "Ranger" Torque Monsters are a slightly modified version for clearance on earlier Rangers w/the 5.0 conversion. Best to consult Bob at TM about your specific applicaton. rcpasq@yahoo.com

FYI, there are less expensive header options for 97 and earlier Rangers from companies like James Duff and Advance Adapters.

Here are some links for V8 conversions on 97-back Rangers:

Thank you for the links! Just to clarify in my own mind Bob, those are for the pre-97 5.0's (nothing to do with Rangers) with the regular gt40 heads, not the gt40p heads, correct? Those James Duff's look pretty good, but I'm thinking they won't fit on my '97 explorer motor, even if they did fit good in the engine bay.

Most 5.0 headers are not designed to accommodate the unique GT40P spark plug angle but should work with all the other SBF heads including the GT40's. It is my understanding that the Torque Monsters are shaped so that they will work with all production SBF heads including the P's.

The headers in the JD and AA links are for 97 and earlier Rangers with 302 swaps but they probably won't work with P heads.

A 97 5.0 Explorer had either GT40 or GT40P heads depending on the production date. The changeover occurred at roughly 1997 1/4 MY. GT40P heads have "GTP" cast into them and 4 raised bars on the end (as opposed to "GT" and 3bars on the GT40's).

Thanks for the info Bob, I'll confirm my heads are the GT40p (I think they are from the Vin #, but hadn't looked on castings). And I have a note into Mr. Pasquale over at explorerforum so I can pick his brain too. Sure appreciate the help. Loving the new pickup, but the wife isn't really enjoying that dang exhaust smell! I still need to figure out my EGR and oxygen sensor needs.

P.S. sorry if I hijacked the thread!
