MPG help.

So the 5.0 is great and I love every single horse ive gained form the swap. But ive been gettin about 9mpg.. so its kinda rough. Just curious what needs to be changed from when I was 3.0.

Carbed 302
C6 3000 stall with Xcase out of 87 F150
MSD blaster 5000chip
1.6 Roller
X cam
Efan
8.8 Explorer Rear with 4.88
35in Baja Claws

Any input is great even if you decide to hate on it

I know something needs to get changed, just wanna hear some ideas.

Dude, what did you expect? You put in a carbed powerhouse engine in from the 80s, your gonna get 80s powerhouse mileage. Duh.

Get a civic or a focus to drive and SAS the truck. Done and done.

haha well I was just seeing if there was anything not too big I could change. I knew it wasn't gonna be awesome but its all good. Thats what my bike is for (40mpg) and a SAS will be in a little while hopefully.

Convert it to fuel injection, and you'll likely see your MPG rise to at least 12. Carburetors are notoriously inefficient.

was going FI until **** was getting to complicated and the cylinders would drop after a few seconds one after the other. So I just went carbed cause of simplicity. Trying to find an AOD to get an extra gear. Im sure that would help a little with a lower stall

Are you seriously asking this question, lets start off. Your old engine got what, 14-15mpg, had around 130-160hp?. Ok, new engine,5.0 carbed, what like 300-450 hp, yea thats going to drop you from 14-15mpg down to 11-12mpg. The tires, will drop you down to 9 MPG. No offense, and there are no stupid questions, but you should seriously buy another ranger like the 2.3L for road driving keep this one for fun driving

I would say 90% of the problem will be in the carb tuning. Also the 4.88's and loose converter willkill some mpg too. That x303 has a lot of duration and overlap that will really make it hard to get any decent mileage out of it.

For an example my 90 Bronco2 has a mostly stock 87 efi 5.0 HO and a c4 with a stock converter. On 35's with 3.73 gears I have more power than I would ever need and I still get over 17mpg on the highway.

get rid of the big tires and save a little, i know it looks better that waybut they do kill the mileage
