Thinking about a 79 Ranger 351... Opinions?

So I was talking with a fellow today about trucks just kinda killing time and he mentioned he was in the market to sell his 79 F150 Ranger with a 351M in it.

As far as I know the truck is in good shape the motor and trans have just been gone through and it has been garaged most of its life.

Here is my questions and maybe you all could point me in the right direction.
A full size truck would be great to have esp something old to mod up and be able to beat on with out to much worry. I feel like I could pick this truck up for aprox 1200 bucks and I have buddies that are for the most part willing to throw me a 4in lift that they have laying around and a set of 35in meats. Overall I feel like I would be out about $1500 which for the animal I am getting wouldnt be bad at all.

My worry is that the economy is not going to get any better and I am concerned that I might should just watch my cash flow so that I have a little more in the reserve bin.

Any point in the right direction on this would be great or you can always just say well if it were me...... and finish the sentence

Thanks all

If you have the money and are willing to spend it then it could be a good option.

As long as the truck is in pretty shape I would consider it. You dont want to buy something that is not going to run for along time. Get something you can enjoy.

good trucks, remove the smog equipment and the 351Ms come alive. what are the rest of the specs? trans? t-case? short bed? long bed? etc...

A $1200 truck will always be worth $1200 so its not really a financial risk unless you get carried away upgrading it or you devalue by breaking something major.

the downside is these are emmissions trucks. I have a 79 with a 460. With the 8:1 compression the HP is about the same as a Saturn 4 banger. Its strong though. Lots of torque/towing power.

No, you are not. The truck has emissions equipment on it, not having to have it registered.

But then again, it being a 79 with a 351M, I don't think it does.

Personally, I wouldn't go for it. As you said, the economy isn't picking itself up yet, and you never know when you may need that extra $1200.

Even if it was strictly a wheeler, imagine the price of equipment you may break. Because breaking things is inevitable.

I'd put the money into a interest flowing savings account, and fap to the thought of the older wheeling rig.
