I'm running 6 1/2" Kenwood Excelon seperates and they are sweet. Not sure exactly how much bass you want, but you might consider a sub for the rear. Basically with the separates that just takes care of my mid bass and treble.

Did they bolt right in the existing speaker hole?

Yes sir, came with an adapter ring to fit stock location with no modification, I just used a hole saw to drill a perfect hole in the door panel for the tweeters

I got them from a local small car audio shop that does high end installs, but I know that Crutchfield and other online sources have them as well

These are perfect circular speakers right? The factory ones are oval, and the Kenwoods fit with a adapter kit you say. Sorry Im new to doing audio.

Yes , perfect circles, the adapter plate just allows them to fit the opening.
Just for reference here is the model number
Kenwood Excelon KFC-X1730P

So why go with the 6-1/2 and not the 5x7's? Or 6x8's?

I'm not a super duper sound quality guy, so the Kenwood 6x8's are the ones I went with. They fit my needs perfectly and they're somewhat inexpensive. Plus they're a bolt in. I guess I should have mentioned that.

Nothing wrong with those, in fact since you are new to car audio, it might be a better solution for you, especially if you are going to install them yourself. The components are a little more difficult to install, and you have to deal with the crossovers as well, so if they are not setup right they will sound like shiat. Also think about your future plans, do you have an amp or are you getting one? components generally need an amp to power them properly. Also the deck can make a huge difference in your sound quality as well, I just upgraded my deck along with the speakers, and it has alot more adjustability, for example it has settings for midbass whereas my old one did not. while I was upgrading I was without front speakers for a couple of days and just running the rear stock speakers off the deck and I was actually surprised at how well they sounded due to the settings, but I am glad I went with the components though, they are awesome, the staging is better, and the sound doesnt seem to be coming from only one place, I hear things in the music that I have never heard before.
