01 XLT 4X4 Maybe/Maybe not!
Hi ya'll!
I am a newbie with a dilemma!
Good news. I have the opportunity to pick up an 01 XLT 4X4 with 5 spd overdrive for $4000.00.
Bad news. Just looked it over and drove it.
91,000 mile engine runs good, not blowing smoke, etc. 4 Dr body is clean, bed needs liner. Looks like a lot of rust underneath.
MAJOR CONCERN.
Transmission control arm/shifter is difficult to move between all gears. On the road it shifts not as smoothly as it should. No noise just feels a tad "rough".
Tranny fluid had some grit. Not good.
Check engine light is on. Owner says he changed EGR valve but did not fix.
4 wheel drive appears to be working fine.
My thinking: If tranny problems, STAY AWAY. Even at at $4000.00 price tag.
Any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks again!
Sam

If by grit in the trans fluid you mean something resembling metal shavings, I would pass. You also mentioned a lot of rust underneath, I would also stay away. I would rather get a clean frame truck with a blown trans than a rusty truck with a possible transmission issue later on down the road.
Thanks russiankid!
Did not think about it from that angle. Major rust underneath truck/frame.
The tranny fluid is more like a super fine grit/sand. Hard to see but you can feel it.
Thanks again!

The fluid should not be gritty at all, it should be smooth and oily (go figure, right? haha).
Thanks to all for your replies!I'm passing. Too many red flags and the seller told me one thing on the phone and when I saw the truck a few different stories came out.
Thanks again!
You guy's are awesome!!!
