1994 ranger No 4 Low

Just bought a 94 ranger that’s been made into a truggy on 39’s. When I got the truck there was no electric shift motor and it was manually placed in 4 low, so I know the actual case is good.

this truck has the 2 buttons on the dash “4x4” and “low range”

2 hi works
4 hi works
4 Lo nothing
the light on the button blinks and the 4 low light on the dash blink.
truck will start in neutral
brake lights are working (good brake switch).
I’ve tried in park and nuetral

any ideas guys?

Welcome to the forum

Take the shift motor off the transfer case and plug it in and try the buttons, see if it can go all the way to 4low position

The flashing 4x4 lights means the controller is confused or it can not move the shift rod into 4low position

The system works using a contact wheel on the shift motor's reduction gear
Pictures here: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums...-motor.123542/

When you select a button the controller activates the shift motor to turn it CW or CCW based on the contact wheels current position, it powers the motor until contact wheel is in the selected position
If motor doesn't move or stops moving then 4x4 lights will flash

thanks for the reply. I’ll check the link. With the motor (brand new) off it will only do 2hi and 4hi.

what is that single wire coming out of the output shaft housing? Mine has been cut.

So after doing some digging (thanks ron) my magnetic sensor has both wires cut (very flush, never even noticed it) and I have a single brown wire that’s been cut coming out of the output shaft housing on the case.

Brown wire is for the electric clutch when using "shift on the fly"

It should be hooked up but not part of your problem

On the output shaft:
On the speedometer cable hook up there should also be a VSS(vehicle speed sensor) and that could be your problem

Look at 3rd and 4th pictures down here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...edometer.shtml

Thats what should be on the output shaft of transfer case
Speedometer cable just goes to the speedometer
VSS goes to computer, 4x4 controller and cruise control

You can't shift into 4low UNLESS you are at 0MPH, and the only way 4x4 controller can tell you are at 0MPH is with VSS, so no VSS signal = no 4Low
Light green wire
Light blue wire
Are the VSS wires

its a cheap enough part. I’ll throw one on tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

bought a new VSS and plugged it up (didn’t stick it in the case) and still nothing. 4x4 light solid, locked into 4 hi. Press the “low range” button and that light just flashes along with the low range light on the cluster.

???

VSS is self powered, generates its own AC Voltage signal, 4x4 control will need to "see it" working before it trusts it to show 0MPH
If you want try spinning gear with drill, make sure speedometer is showing MPH if not you are spinning it the wrong way

And VSS may not be the only problem but it is for sure one problem

Is shift motor still off the transfer case?

As said flashing 4wd light means controller has a reason NOT to change to 4low

makes sense. I’ll be sure and try that!!

motor is still on the truck. It wouldn’t go to low position off the truck (before vss). I can also shift through all 3 modes by hand with a paid of channel locks no problem, so I don’t think it’s binding but I will make sure.

Not for nothin'.......but, "new" just means NEVER tested now-a-days, not "it works"

Do you have the old shift motor?

There is a "stop" on the contact wheel so it can't turn 360deg, in my #2 post is the link to pictures, you can see it on the reduction gear
Now I can't see that being the problem, but..................can't be overlooked either

first, let me thank you for all the help and knowledge. Very kind and I am very grateful.

I do not have the old motor. Truck didn’t come with one as they were just leaving it in 4low and switching it out by hand sporadically. Unfortunately I don’t know the story on the truck.

So the flashing 4WD lights are NEW, because you never had a shift motor before

Then I might pull off the shift motor and hook it up to the battery to see if it runs all the away from 2WD to 4low by just applying 12v and ground to the 2 motor wires
In the link you can see its the yellow and orange wires, only 2 wires that run to the motor part of the shift motor
12v/ground rotates one-way, ground/12v rotates the other, same as power window motors

Mark where its pointed before you start, assuming 2WD, then rotate Counter clockwise 90deg for 4high, then another 90deg for Neutral(yes there is a neutral you just can't select it), then another 90deg for 4low, so 270deg of rotation, then reverse wires and rotate it back to 2WD mark
