2001 4.0L warm start problems
I have an 01 Ranger 4.0 man trans 4x4 I'm having an issue with engine revving to 2000+ when shifting, but I also have a problem with it not starting if it has been run for even a few minutes. First start is no problem. I have replaced the TPS and the IAC due to the revving problem with a slight improvement? Still it will only restart if I unplug the TPS.

I would get a Bluetooth OBD2 reader, $15, like an ELM327, and the $5 Torque Pro APP
You can then see(on your phone) sensor data in real time, you see what the computer sees, and it's wireless
This can save you money on replacing things that are working as they should
And these work on ANY vehicle sold in the US/Canada since 1996, still work on 2024 models, its required by law, so not a Ford thing
You could then see what the TPS is sending to computer
Also what voltage computer is sending to the IAC Valve to set RPM level, and what computer "thinks" is the RPM level, lol
I would be curious as to what the 5 volt ECT(engine coolant temp) sensor is sending to the computer
ECT voltage(engine temp) is what the computer uses to set idle RPMs and Choke level
Dash temp gauge uses a temp SENDER, 12volts, so different than the ECT sensor, so sender can be working OK but maybe not the ECT
Computer has a Memory it saves when key is off, and it has a battery backup
If you unhook negative battery cable for at least 5 min that will clear the memory, and cause computer to "relearn" sensor settings, like the TPS and IAC Valve
It takes a few drive cycles(heat up/cool down) for it to complete the "relearning"

I did get a Bluetooth scanner and the "Torque" app as you suggested, and it did give me a pending p0118 code for the ECT. I pulled the sensor and bought a new one, but also found the wires to the ECT corroded at the connector. I am waiting for a harness to arrive before putting it back together. Will let you know how it works.
My neighbor is having a similar problem with his F-150, so I am going to use this device and knowledge to help him.

To RonD: ECT sensor and pigtail replaced. Started and let idle until warm. Idle dropped to 750rpm. Shut off and restarted right up. Test drove for approximately 3 miles, no racing between gears. Gave me some unknown codes, but I think that was just the ECU relearning. Hot start great. Thanks Ron!
