I have a 2002 Ranger ext cab 4.0 Automatic 4x4. What years transmissions can I use to replace my rapidly failing one?

From my personal experience you will be better off rebuilding the one you have if it is at all possible. If you have to get a new(used) trans. It has to be from a 2001-2010 ranger 4.0 4x4. Very important that it is a trans from a ranger not explorer and it was on the same size motor and also 4x4. A trans from a smaller motor isnt built to take the torque from the 4.0.

Rebuilding yours is better than buying someone else's problem

But to answer the question 2001 - 2011 automatic from a 4.0l 4x4 Ranger OR Mazda B4000 4x4 will be plug and play

As said, it must be from 4.0l engine and must be 4x4, no conversion is possible

If yours is 4x4 it's probably a 5r55e I pulled one out if a 96 explorer with 4.0 in it everything was the same I'll tell you know get a serviceable trans you'll know if it is if it has a dipstick but I will say this I'm getting ready to buy a 5.4 trtion v8 since my motor is junk now but I've went through 2 5r55e trans in a matter of 3 months so better rebuilt or reman but 96 will fit

No, in 2001 Ford added an ISS sensor on drivers side of 5R transmissions, just above the shifter, so 2001 and up Computer will need to see and use this added sensor

You can use a 2001-2011 5R in a 1995-2000 Ranger 4x4, the added ISS sensor isn't needed so just isn't hooked up, but can't go the other way

. In a earlier post of mine you said a 96bwill work in a 02 it will just throw a code mine ran fine for a month then 3rd gear doesn't want to lock in right but I'm pretty sure the transmission is connected completely to my 02 tranny wiring so unless the 96 explorer trans was swapped for a 01 or newer trans then I don't see where the difference is maybe I missed something on mine I'll have too look at it again but I'm pretty sure everything hooked up the same
