2006 4.0 4x4 not engaging

4x4 not engaging. Checked outside fuse 10 and inside fuse 10, 27,28 all good. Unplugged battery for over one hour to see if tccm is a problem and see if it shut itself off. Reconnected afterwards and after starting I switched to 4h and I heard a click and seen the 4x4 light on. I proceeded to put on 4L then 4x4 light disappeared. Put back on 4H light didn't come.back on nor am I hearing clicks and put on 2wd etc. No luck. I'm gonna try and unplug battery again and once I get it in 4h and 4x4 light stays on plan on just leaving it there as only use the truck when it snows.not a permanent fix just something to get me by. Any ideas or suggestions?

Update: it didnt work the second time around so im stuck. My thoughts are replace the tccm and switch.

Try this: Remove the transfer case's motor, leave it plugged in and try actuating it.

There's one "collar" which engages into 4WD. It sounds like yours is working
There's another which engages the low range. It sounds like yours isn't working.

When you remove the TC motor, there's a triangular fitting (which the motor turns).
Since there were hand operated selectors (the now discontinued Shiftster), maybe you can try to turn yours (assuming you found the motor working) and see if you can feel anything?

Maybe check the fluid. I changed mine and the 2WD/4WD/4WLO got crisper.
