2x4 to 4x4 conversion

OK guys be honest.

In all reality roughly how much work and how much money would it take for me to convert my auto 2005 Edge to 4X4. I ask this cause I am tired of getting stuck and am pretty frustrated with the truck at the moment. Spent 4 hours in the middle of the desert digging out of really soft sand. So on that note either the Ranger goes 4x4 or I get a different vehicle.

I am actually thinking something like a 96 cherokee or something like that if I did go that route. I really love the truck though. Any idea what it would cost to do. Looking for a ballpark here as I still owe a good bit on the Ranger and really don't want to get rid of it?

I have converted a couple but the cost is hard to nail down. The first one I used a parts truck to install all the 4wd stuff. The second one I swapped the body onto a 4wd frame from a rolled truck. Its not hard too do. A front axle is a bolt in except ford didn't install the rear mount on the frame for the pumpkin, I fabbed one and welded it in on mine. Spindles and half shafts are a bolt in. The way to go with the transfer case is a manual transfer case so you don't have to deal with wiring. If you go automatic transfer case the dash harness will need changed. The trans is a choice between buying a 4wd trans or tearing yours down and changing the output shaft or using a divorced transfer case which would require a custom mount and driveshafts. Depending on what you have to pay for parts it could be anywhere from 500-2000+. The cheap way is to find a rolled truck and get all the parts in one shot.

Ok thanks. That was the kind of answer I was looking for. Worth the trouble or no? Should I do it or just get an older vehicle with 4x4?

I would say its well worth it but I would also say that if I owed a bunch on a nice truck I probably would be very cautious 4 wheeling it.

PM 04 EDGE, he swapped his 04 2wd Edge to 4x4. Its a pretty straight forward swap you need the axle, transmission, transfer case and depending if you go with a electronic or manual transfer case some other odds and ends.

I plan on swapping mine within the next 3-4 years.
