2x4 conversion to 4x4

What parts would I need to convert my 2x4 Ranger to a 4x4, and what would I be looking at for cost of parts?

I know it’s easier to just buy a new truck but I love my Ranger and finances don’t allow for buying an all new truck.

Welcome to the forum

2011 Ranger 4.0l engine, should always include that with questions

4WD was not an "option" added when building a Ranger in any year
A 4WD Ranger has a different front frame, its "boxed" where a 2WD frame is regular "C" style frame rails

So a 4x4 Ranger starts off on the assembly line with the 4WD frame and parts are added to that

So while doable for sure, there will be quite a bit of welding required and precise measuring for mounting the front axle, that's the 4 wheel alignment needed or truck will drive squirrely and wear out tires in a month, lol

You need a 4WD transmission matching what you have now, 5R55E(auto) or M5OD-R1(manual), and a MANUAL transfer case, I wouldn't try electric, adds another layer of issues
Transmissions are made in 2wd and 4wd versions, conversion is not possible, well cost of conversion is usually more than twice the price for 4WD transmission so, silly to do for most people
You can use a 2001 to 2011 Ranger 4.0l or Mazda B4000 4WD transmission, plug and play
Manual transfer case is a BW1354m, m is for manual, "e" was electric version, also no conversion for these

2WD Ranger uses Coil springs on front suspension, 4WD after 1998 uses Torsion bars, so totally different
So it will probably be easier to do an SAS(solid axle swap) which was based on coil spring suspension, article here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...xle_swap.shtml

Ranger front suspension over the years seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...spension.shtml
Yes, its the same in 2010 as 2011/12

All in all the cost and labor will be high

Finding a rolled 2004 to 2011 4x4 Ranger with a frame that is straight or can be straightened, and doing a body swap would be less work and cost less, so your body on a 4WD frame, and engine if you want

If you have a 2010, you will also have issues with the "Traction Control" ,"Roll Stability Control" and the "Yaw Control"
