My 98 ranger has a 5.0, auto/overdrive trans and and transfer case from 97 mountaineer...I'd like to put a 4wd case in in the future, which unit do I need?

 

Borg Warner BW4406 was used in the full size Ford trucks, and will bolt up to the 5.0l's automatic after AWD transfer case is removed, front drive shaft "should" be OK, rear drive shaft will need to be changed, shortened

On the 4406, is it possible to go electric and maybe splice the plug from ranger case if the both have same number of wires?

 

Yes they use a similar system

You should be able to mount the Ranger BW1354 shift motor onto the BW4406 so no wiring change, if you don't have the BW1354 shift motor but do have the BW4406 motor then you can splice wires, but I would go thru the trouble of re-pinning matching connector

If you don't have either shift motor then get a Ranger one so it matches current harness

There is a Brown wire on either transfer case for the internal electric clutch, its not part of the shift motor wiring, it can be run thru the 8 pin connector or not, either way was "factory wiring", lol.
So don't let that through you, both motors used 7 wires, 2 for power(12v/GND) and 5 for position sensor inside motor
8th wire was the electric clutch, which may run thru the 8 pin connector or may run from truck harness directly to transfer case, in which case it was cut when engine swap happened.
Electric clutch was used for "shift on the fly" so not needed if you stop to shift into 4high

 

Thanks, I believe I do have the motor on the case out in garage, I have a thread on the forum about a sas I'm thinking of doing down the road. I've read on these and im in the category of doing one simply cause I like the look. I like a cool spring over leaf spring even though it is probable a bit more difficult. Any thoughts on this?

 

I'm thinking about picking up a 98 or so jeep Cherokee or wagoneer like my neighbor has. It's got dana 44 or 60 front diff. If I got one I'd have both front n rear riffs so no need to get the gears done.
