86 motor swap/ donor options
86 motor swap/ donor options
So i got an 86 with a 2.9 from a buddy for basically free. The issue is I camt get it to run, amd the wiring has been gone through by a few people it looks like. Im thinking about just tearing all that junk out and swapping the motor.
Ive seen a few 4.0 rangers that are newer (up to a 99 for decent prices, the general hitch is usually a blown tranny or 2wd.
So if I can snag a truck with the blown trans is it better to put the motor to the old trans (manual and many of thr ones around are autos) in the old body or try and put the old trans in the new body? Neither?
I dont really want to have to buy a transmission if i can avoid it and I think the one in the truck now is ok (I would do a new clutch, slave, and throw out bearing more than likely).

Welcome to the forum
1986 to 1994 Rangers used the EEC-IV 60 wire computer, 1995 and up used the EEC-V 104 wire computer
So you want to stick to the 1986-1994 model years if you are "wiring"
A 4.0l will never have a "bad" manual transmission, they used the M5OD-R1, bullet proof, well pretty much, lol
1986 to 1994 2.9l or 4.0l used the A4LD automatic, a good transmission but at $2,000 for full rebuild most sell the vehicle
Your 1986 is 4WD?
Anyway, the 2.9l used a weaker manual transmission and while it will bolt to the 4.0l engine it will not last long, just too much torque even if you take it easy
If you can get a 1990-1994 4.0l Ranger with computer and engine wiring harness you can do the swap into the 1986
Or if you can find a 1986-1992 2.9l Ranger with computer and engine wiring harness with bad engine OR automatic you can do the swap
1995 and up is doable but loads of wiring changes

My 86 is a 4wd. Even as a temp option I may try and take the full engine and computer and put it in the older truck. It wont be a daily driver so im not concerned so much right away about it lasting.
I have a line on a truck that is a 4x4 auto from 99 the guy may let go for 300. Could be worth it for the parts.
