99 4.0 auto transfer case & tranny removal
99 4.0 auto transfer case & tranny removal
Can anyone direct me to a video showing how to remove these? I need to put a new torque converter in and when under the truck I noticed fluid leaking at the back of the t-case. Since the truck isn't running at all I figure the seals on the case are leaking so I bought a new gasket set to install.
You want to remove the rear drive shaft flange before removing transfer case because its torqued on VERY tight, spec is 150-180ft/lb
I think its a 30mm nut but thin wall socket is needed, but can't remember exact size
You can change the seal at that time and then reinstall flange and nut, torque to spec
This is because trying to get that nut off with transfer case on a bench will be very hard unless you have air or electric impact wrench capable of 200ft/lb torque
Transfer case is held to transmission by 5 bolts so not hard to remove
Your 1999 will look like the one on the far right in first picture here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...er_cases.shtml
You have a BW1354, you can see the 5 bolt holes and the "cup" for front drive shaft in the picture, the "cup" was used from 1998 to 2011 Ranger 4x4s
And you need to remove front drive shaft, of course, to remove transfer case
Whats bolted to the "cup" is called a propeller joint and often failed on these front drive shafts, makes a "clicking" noise when in 4WD and starting to fail

My brother removed both driveshafts already based on a video my nephew found but it was for a manual tyranny with the shifter on the floor which I know makes a difference in removal and why I need a different video. Is it difficult to replace the seals on the t-case? I found plenty of videos on things like sensor replacement on t-case but nothing on just new gaskets.
Transfer case has no sensors, just FYI
Only difference in manual or electric is that you need to unplug the 8 wire connector on the shift motor, vs 2 wire connector on manual
If you have a Brown wire that's not part of the 8-wire connector, cut it, then splice it back together when reinstalling, its for the electric clutch
There is a rubber VENT hose on the front of transfer case, just unhook it
