Auto will not shift from 1st sometimes

Hello, looking for some advice. I’ve been looking around on these forums and others and can’t find my particular problem anywhere. I have a 2001 ranger 3.0 automatic 4x2 with 193,000 miles. I have an intermittent shift problem where the tranny won’t shift out of 1st gear. If I stop and go back to neutral or park and then back to drive the problem goes away. The transmission shifts completely normal otherwise. The shifter seems loose and doesn’t have a defined click in the gears. I have read about checking the bracket under the dash and will look at that as soon I get home, but is there anything else I should look at? Anyone else have an issue like this?

Welcome to the forum

You should have a 5R44E automatic in a 2001 3.0l Ranger

No not a common problem, unless trans was just rebuilt, the 1-2 shift valve is sticking or not getting enough pressure build up to move, is the possible problem.
You could try some friction modifier, i.e. "trans fix" products
But ultimately you would need to pull Valve Body to find or fix the problem

I have the same exact issue and I found out it’s the way you put it into drive, for me I have to click it in drive and push it down just a little further and it doesn’t do it, so it’s something to do with the shift column but I’m still trying to figure out why it’s doing that, like does the adjuster for the gear indicator have to be spot on or if its off by a little (mine is) maybe that affects it? Idk let me know if this helped and also if you find out the cause of it.

Welcome to the forum

Google: Ranger loose column shifter
That is a common issue on ALL Ford trucks, several videos for Rangers and F-series

Usually just a loose screw or two under the dash

The indicator above the column is adjustable but has nothing to do with the actual "gear" the transmission is in
