Automatic to 5 speed transmission conversion

Hello My name is Anthony Serrano
My current 99 rangers auto transmission is going out with 285k milked on it...it was given to me at 247k miles. The reverse went out so I decided to drop it and fix it myself which I almost successfully did. It still drove good for about a month and would go reverse sometimes but now it will rev to 5k rpm and will barely reach 45mph and at that point I stopped driving it. Now I have a 5 speed but it’s off a 1997 4.0 V6 and my question is..will a 4.0 transmission fit on a 3.0?

Ron usually answers these, but I think the bolt pattern is very different.
You would need a manual from a 3 litre Vulcan engine.

I'll send a PM to Ron, he'll know for sure, but I think nothing will change over, the bolt pattern on the crank is different.

No, it won't fit

The Rangers used the M5OD-R1 manual transmissions, from 1988 to 2011
They have an integrated bellhousing, so bellhousing and main transmission case are one piece
So these were made engine specific
2.3l/2.5l Lima pattern
2.3l Duratec pattern
3.0l Vulcan Pattern
2.9l/4.0l Cologne Pattern

All M5OD-R1s, but not swappable between engines

Also the 2WD and 4x4 are different, the 4x4 has a short tail shaft and shorter housing that a transfer case can bolt to

Side by side 3.0l and 4.0l patterns seen here, not even close to matching up: https://www.therangerstation.com/wp-...ellhousing.jpg

Automatics do have detachable bell housings, but..................you do need to partially disassemble the front pump to do the swap, so can get complicated without a full tear down

Well there will be people looking for 4.0l M5OD-R1(M5R1), they fit 1990-2011 Ranger 4.0l or 1993-2009 Mazda B4000, so a big market

So put it up for sale, while looking for a 3.0l M5R1
