Depends on how good of fabricator you are.
a 4x2 and 4x4 have different frames, so you'll have to custom design and build almost everything.

It's usually cheaper to buy a 4x4 Ranger than to convert.

As far as I know 1996-2003 Ranger clusters are plug and play, tach signal wire is there, just need a cluster with a tach

Can't convert an automatic trans from 2WD to 4WD or vise versa economically, you need to install the correct length output shaft, which is not expensive($50) but requires full tear down to change, also need new tail shaft housing
Better to buy the type you need and rebuild it

Probably need to order most parts on-line

Ok looked up the sloppy shifter problem looked under the dash and one of the bolts was almost backed all the way out. I tightened up the bolts and 1st is back. I shift to 1st it acts like D and R also after driving down the road when I went to turn around I was at a stop and went to 2nd and it wouldn't move it took a bit of going back an forth between gears before it finally caught. I noticed sometimes when I try to drive it the O/D off light will start flashing but going down the road it is still shifting into overdrive. When I first start it up the light is off I can hit the button and it comes on solid doesn't flash. Also today sometimes I could shift to reverse and it would go into reverse and back up. Of course when I got out my scanner I couldn't get the O/D off light to start flashing and try to read any codes.

Could this possibly be a computer issue with this new info? I just don't want to rebuild the trans just to find out its electrical even though it seems to me mechanical I remember my dad's S10 having trans problems and it turned out to be the computer for the trans that messed up.

Another thing is when driving in any gear its in including overdrive and you floor it when it tries to downshift its like it shifts into neutral. The gear it wants to downshift to I know works fine if not a downshift. When its upshifts to that gear I can give it gas and it doesn't slip so its like it downshifts to neutral when floored.

No, its not an electrical issue

Automatics still work the same way, all the added electrical parts are in the Valve Body, they just allow it to shift better and give better MPG

You will at least need to pull the pan and valve body and see if there is any obvious problems

If any debris is seen in the pan then you will need to pull the transmission

You can take it to a shop and they can hook up pressure gauges to see if valve body/electrics are working OK or if its a mechanical issue

Or you can do it yourself, how-tos and pressures expected are available on-line

The more I try to drive the truck the more I think its in the valve body. I don't know much about automatic transmissions but today I shifted into 1st gave some gas it tried to move forward but no go then I let off the gas and there was a jerk like it finally shifted fully and I hit the gas and it moved forward with no slipping. Also can anyone tell me what the OD off light flashing means?

I would just like to know exactly what the problem is not just rebuild or replace the trans and have it work fine and not know what the true problem is. I know when I teardown the trans if something is broken I'll probably be able to see it but would like to know in case it isn't obvious what's broke or worn out. I would like to know based on the symptoms what to look for.

Just seems odd that I can get reverse to work sometimes. And the 1st gear doing what it is seems like something in the valve body not building pressure to fully shift until the rpms are raised then lowered at that time it shifts into 1st. It just seems odd for a trans to wear out at only 102,000mi.

Computer flashes OD light when it sees a transmission problem, there should be some Codes set in the transmission range, which is P0700 to P0804, and P1700-P1803

You can see them here: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li...II_codes.shtml

Not all code readers read these

You will never find a direct "this is the problem" answer with your symptoms
If you drop the pan and there are metal bits then most likely its sprang issues, so rebuild
If fluid/pan is clean then try the valve body

You come out of your house in the morning and a tire is flat, is there a hole in it or did some one let the air out?
Something as simple is that is still 50/50

Automatic transmission is a bit more complicated to diagnose

I did pull the pan and change fluid that's as far as I've taken pieces off at this point. I didn't see any significant metal pieces in the pan. I guess a simple way would be to flush the trans if the valve body has a clog to see what that does. A simple job I can do quickly if that does nothing I'll pull the valve body cover and check the gasket. If I see nothing wrong I plan to get a trans from u pull it for $99 since that's cheaper than a rebuild then rebuild the trans that's in it when funds allow. That way I'll have a fresh trans if the other starts giving problems.

Like I said I'm a manual guy. If it grinds on downshift and the clutch is fine the syncros are worn out if it pops out of gear shift forks are worn out. Standards are simple autos not so much. I'm sure I'll have to pick your brain during the rebuild since I've only rebuilt one auto and it was the infamous Chrysler A604 auto and it was a pain. Then knowing me I'll want to rebuild the engine to so most of the drivetrain is fresh hell it'll only take a day to refresh the engine I'm sure the trans will take a few days or more.

My code reader won't give trans codes I lost the one I had that would. Based on the symptoms could you make a guess on what code it would be?

What years can I replace the trans with? Also I heard even the V6 rangers used the same trans just different bell housings so is the bell housing changeable? Could I get a trans from a V6 ranger and swap bell housings?

For a 2003 Ranger with 3.0l V6 you need a 2002-2008 3.0l Ranger 5R44E 2WD if thats what you have, for the swap

No, the 4.0l V6 used slightly different trans, 5R55E
The 2.3l 4cyl Ranger used the same 5R44E and yes you could change the bell housing but does involve realigning the front pump, because bell housing is the case for the front pump
2.3l years 2002-2011, these only came in 2WD

So what year transmissions will fit with no mods? Its a 03 with the 2.3L. The 3.0L I have is my 99. The one that needs the trans is the 03 with the 2.3L that I'm restoring for the sanctuary my 99 is a stick because I prefer a standard. But the one for the sanctuary is the one that has to be an auto.
