Can't start in drive

I got stuck with my 98 ranger 4.0 auto 4x4 this winter. When I got out the truck wouldn't move in drive. It starts in second and I can shift it into drive when I get up to 3,000 rpms. Reverse also works fine.

Tell me if I am on the right track here:

from reading other posts in this forum it is probably a pressure issue, possible the sep gasket.

Did you rock it back and forth to get it out? If so start looking for a rebuilt or price for rebuilding.

I was afraid of that. I live in the sticks and don't even know where to go for a rebuild on this thing. Nearest used tranny I can find is over 100 miles away.

Anyone have a ball park figure on rebuilds? I would like to find a place that'd do a bench job.

You probably took out the low roller clutch. Can you start off in manual low, also?

I'm assuming he did rock it back and forth to get free, because of his post. And if thats true, he welded most of the clutch plates together, warped the drums, and fried the bands.

There is different clutch plates in that transmission then i think you are thinking of, should have one for Drive, and one for Reverse.
i agree tho, OP should probably start looking for a rebuilt, cause his is toast.

The clutch plates are in sets. 1-2 forward clutches, 3-4, and the overdrive set, and the reverse. (assuming its a 5 speed auto).
