I found this 2001 Explorer axle for sale near by and was wondering from looking at the pictures if there's anything I should consider replacing if need be just by looking at it. The seller said he cleaned it up with a wire brush and painted it black since these pictures but he doesn't have any recent pictures.

You'll have to check out the calipers, brake pads, and the internals in person. The housing looks fine though.

 

how much does he want for it? i'd jump on it just for the hell of it.. if it was a decent price.. could always be used.. even if u have to put new stuff in it.. build it how u want it.. and knowing whats in it.

 

The guy wants $320 for it but I'm gonna try to talk talk him down a bit. He didn't state if it had an LS or not but the gearing is 3.73.

well when you get there on the pumpkin one of the bolts holding the cover on will have a metal tag. Read it and somewhere it will say something like 3 73 or 4L10 or something like that. It mean that it has either 3.73's or 4.10's and the L in between it means it has a LS.

It looks fine to me...I wouldn't pay more than $250 at the very most...

You don't find very many 3.73 with an LS in them...I have only seen 4.10 in person myself...and I go junkyard hopping a lot...

Even if he DID do the painting, I wouldn't pay that much.

You want to watch out for the hard lines, the calipers & even wearing on the rotor and pad.

Do you have rear wheel ABS? If so, then you'll still be able to use it afterwards. Make sure to get the parking brake hardware and stuff if it's available, else you won't be able to use it (parking brake). If you have a 4WD, you may eventually want to get the master cylinder to fully use the brakes...you will notice after insallation (w/o the MC) that there will be uneven wearing with the front/back pads.

I was considering a redo of the paint job if it looks like s**t. Thanks for mentioning the parking brake hardware. I believe the axle was yanked from the junkyard but never installed. I'll make sure to ask him about the hardware. The most I'm willing to pay for it is $275. As for ABS, I'm not sure. I bought the truck slightly used with 4200 miles on it. And I'm 2WD. Anything to consider with a 2WD? Or does the above about the master cylinder, etc. still apply?

 

just fyi, your truck will be lowered in the back with an explorer axle unless you flip the spring mounts

LOL, I've done the swap its not to hard. Getting the pads and shock mounts at the right angle was easy. the harder part for me was getting them the same distance apart. i don't know if I'm just a tard about doing it or what but I couldn't get it don't for some reason.

 

If he used stock explorer springs, that will only make a 1-2" drop total (with the spring under axle). Add the Chevy shackles, and it will actually be raised about an inch (varying on your model, the springs, how many leaves, etc.).

Glad you put it on aight. You probably have the 2WD rear ABS, and you should be fine. Everything should be working alright if it's all mounted properly.

Did you take measurements off the old ranger axle? The exploder is going to be 1.5" longer per side, thus the mounting problem. Use a string or tape measure and be precise from the diffy out on both, and regarding the shock mounts. How are you relocating the spring perches???

How's pinion angle?
