Differential cover leak

Differential cover leak
Hi Guys,
The cover on my rear differential has a slight leak. I am replacing the bed soon so I thought it would be a lot easier to replace the gasket when the it is off.
Is there anything I have to look out for or is it a straight gasket replace? I don't want to open up a hornets nest. Also, is there any lube that is recommended?
I have a 2004 XLT 4.0 4 X 4
Thanks
Larry

Nothing tricky, just a flat gasket replacement, and in 2004 it may not have even had a gasket from the factory, just silicone around it and bolt it tight, lol, I think Ford used Permatex Ultra Black or similar.
Ranger 4x4s often had Limited Slip(Trac Lok) rear differentials, these require a Friction Modifier added to the oil/lubricant, or clutches won't slip going around corners
This won't hurt OPEN type differentials so just add it either way
If you want to know if you have limited slip, look on the drivers door label, back side edge of door
Find AXLE at the bottom, there will be a two digit code, a Letter and number = Limited Slip, two numbers = OPEN
Look here for more info: Ford 7.5 & 8.8 Inch Axle Tag & Door Codes : The Ranger Station
You will have an 8.8" rear differential with a 4.0l engine
The latest from Ford was to use 75-140 oil or synthetic, factory was 75-90, Ford spec'ed in the 140 because of possible humming or chattering noise and wear with the 90 weight
If limited slip add 4 ounces of Friction modifier, you can also get the axle lubricants with Ford modifier already added
Capacity is just less than 3 quarts, 5.5 pints

Do yourself a favor and buy the Lube Locker reusable silicone gasket. That is, IF you're gonna keep the truck for any extended amount of time...
