Engine swap question

I have a 2002 FX4 with the 4.0 SOHC. Is it possible and practical to swap it for an older standard cam shaft 4.0 engine. A friend of mine donated a 1997 Mazda B 4000 but the engine looks completely different.

I've never really ever seen it attempted. Mostly because a: why? b: why? c: power loss. d: complications with tune e: why?

If you're experiencing the common early 4.0L SOHC problem of the timing chains being noisy due to a faulty designed tensioner and guides, I suggest finding a '04+ 4.0 to swap in. I dropped a 1,000 mile 2006 engine into my '01 that had those issues and was only out about $1100. Or drop the $1500-1800 on new chains, guides, and tensioners. Either way, motor has to come out.

"BONE yards".

Also called automotive recycling facilities. The ones that have the newer vehicles aren't like they were of yesteryear... Check out car-part.com. It's an online database of "boneyards"/"junkyards" and their inventories by region/state. That's where I found my replacement transmission and replacement engine.

I've yet to see any of the newer motors (4.0 SOHC) available in new/rebuilt short block form. Probably likely due to the specialized equipment needed for the cams. And if you did happen to find one, it will likely be ungodly expensive.
